Description
Have had Steve Reich on my mind lately. Such an interesting notion, minimalism. And actually, something which has proven to be so sustainable. But I digress …
This excerpt is cheap Reich in the sense that it is using controlled feedback to achieve the same basic effect as Reich’s through-composed work. It could go on forever, but let’s call it a day after a few minutes …

Nice piece James! Are you planning to release some minimalist work? The “Chinese” sound is a beautiful choice on your part and demonstrates your talent well.
I have always liked the minimalist style, sometimes more as a concept than the pieces themselves. When CD’s began to be our dominant form of musical acquisition, Phillip Glass was one of my first purchases.
It is often more fun for me to note the influence on other artists than to sit through entire compositions. I tend to kind of wander mentally when listening to minimalist concerts.
It is such a versatile concept however and I love when composers as diverse as Erik Satie, Pat Metheny, Mike Oldfield and Laurie Anderson play in the field.
Something I always enjoy about you is your amazing mental comprehension of theory and technique, and how you then draw that down into these little pieces of creative brilliance.
Enough for now. No one has EVER accused me of being a minimalist verbally!
Jeff, you beauty! So good to hear from you, and thanks so much for the kind words.
I just had the notion to take a whack at this the other day, actually, and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I for one have always admired the style, but never dove in … so I thought first time around I’d let my computer do it.
One thing about having become so entrenched in generative music conceptually is that it without question forces you to ‘get’ what you’re going after … in a technical and theoretical sense. Without that, you don’t stand much of a chance of producing any promising output. As they say, teaching is learning … but I never thought I’d be teaching my computer!
Best
Jim
